Chain contracts

The European Court of Justice has decided that it is legal to employ people with multiple short contracts, rather than offering a permanent position, Der Spiegel reports. The employer only has to show that there is a reason for the time limit, every time the contract gets renewed as a temporary position.

And which employer can’t make up such reasons? “Oh, we will definitely need you for this project, but it finishes in summer next year, and then we don’t know if we’ll need you any more, so we can unfortunately only offer you an 18 month extension. After that we’ll have to see.”
